PUBLIC STUDY GLOBAL B2C 2025

EV charging around the world

As electric vehicles gain traction, charging infrastructure is under pressure to keep up. The sixth edition of Roland Berger’s EV Charging Index, in partnership with Potloc, captures survey data from 33 global markets to identify accelerators and roadblocks for the industry.

What’s driving EV adoption, and what still holds it back?

From China’s rapid infrastructure buildout to mixed momentum in Europe and the Americas, the EV landscape is far from uniform.

To help automotive decision-makers understand what’s next, Roland Berger partnered with Potloc to survey a global target of 12,000 EV drivers.

Key trends.

1

APAC leads in EV enthusiasm.

rb_ev-charging-index_graph1A

Globally, most respondents (already EV drivers) expect to stay electric for their next vehicle. Asia-Pacific leads, with China at the forefront: 99% of Chinese consumers plan to buy an EV again, compared to 78% in Japan — a relatively low figure for the region.

2

Home charging dominates in North America.

Most EV drivers in North America charge at home (78%) — the highest share globally. Public charging networks are expanding more slowly, but fast chargers now make up 25% of stations, reflecting demand for quicker options.
3

EV growth plateaus in Europe.

While Europe remains a mature EV market, growth is showing some signs of leveling off. While countries like Belgium and the UK saw small increases in sales penetration, Germany saw its second consecutive decline following a key subsidy change in late 2023, falling from 26% to 22% — although this trend is set to reverse in 2025.

We used Potloc’s analysis dashboard for initial scanning of results, and Potloc’s experts provided helpful input and structure in survey optimisation, leading to better outcomes.
